John 10:12 Meaning He Who Is a Hired Hand

He who is a hired hand, and not a shepherd, who doesn’t own the sheep, sees the wolf coming, leaves the sheep, and flees. The wolf snatches the sheep, and scatters them.

What does John 10:12 mean?

The sheep are the divine thoughts, the quiet flock of higher thinking a person keeps watch over in meditation. The wolf is the animal nature, the lower instinct pictured in the sky as Lupus among the decans, the beast that scatters gentle thought the moment it is let in.

The sheep are the divine thoughts, the quiet flock of higher thinking a person keeps watch over in meditation. The wolf is the animal nature, the lower instinct pictured in the sky as Lupus among the decans, the beast that scatters gentle thought the moment it is let in. The shepherd is the Christ nature within, the part that guards the new self and owns the flock. The hireling stands for the part of a person that keeps the inner life only while it costs nothing and bolts when the animal draws near, and so the divine thoughts are seized and driven apart.

When the guarding self is only hired and not devoted, the lower nature walks in and the higher thoughts break and scatter.

  1. When your mind is quiet for a minute, with no phone in your hand, something restless will show up and want attention. Stay with the quiet a little longer than feels comfortable instead of reaching for the screen.
  2. In a group chat where someone drops a cruel joke or a bit of outrage bait, you can feel the pull to pile on. Let that one sit unanswered and say the kinder thing instead, even if nobody claps.
  3. When the pressure is on, a tight deadline, traffic, a tense meeting, that is exactly when you want to hand the wheel to whatever is angriest in you. Take one breath and keep the wheel yourself.

What in me only guards the good when it is cheap to do so?

Bhagavad Gita 6

The mind that is not held steady runs off wherever the senses pull it, so the practitioner has to sit with it like a keeper, gathering it back again and again until it stays.

The untrained mind is drawn as an ox that wanders into any field it likes. Only when someone holds the rope with real patience, not just when it is easy, does the animal walk beside them.
