John 10:14 Meaning I Am the Good Shepherd

I am the good shepherd. I know my own, and I’m known by my own;

What does John 10:14 mean?

To know and to be known is love's whole relationship with the mind, and there is no distance in it. The gentle teacher does not observe a person's thoughts from outside, as a stranger studies what it fears; it knows them from within, as a mind knows itself, because love and what it guides were never truly separate.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

To know and to be known is love's whole relationship with the mind, and there is no distance in it. The gentle teacher does not observe a person's thoughts from outside, as a stranger studies what it fears; it knows them from within, as a mind knows itself, because love and what it guides were never truly separate. And the knowing runs both ways. A mind that lets itself be led comes to recognize its guide as its own, so that guide and guided are two names for one thing.

This mutual knowing is the end of separation stated plainly. Where the ego kept a mind a stranger to itself, love restores the recognition, and a person discovers that the voice they follow and the self they are were always one.

Shepherd: the voice for love that knows the mind from within, not as a stranger but as itself Sheep: the thoughts of the mind that come to know their guide as their own, ending the sense of separation

EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

To know and to be known has nothing to do with information. The mind knows about things; it gathers facts, names, and opinions. This knowing is deeper. It is the recognition of one life looking out through many eyes.

When you are truly present, you sense the same aliveness in another being that you feel as your own innermost self. You are no longer two separate stories meeting; you are one awareness recognizing itself. That is why the knowing moves both ways at once. The presence in you and the presence in the other are not two things, and when you meet from that depth, you truly know one another.

Live John 10:14 today

  1. Sometime today, sit with whatever you are actually feeling instead of narrating it like a critic watching from across the room. Be inside it rather than above it.
  2. In a conversation, listen for the thing under the words instead of waiting for your turn. Being known is quiet and it tends to arrive in both directions at once.
  3. When you are judging yourself harshly after a meeting or a message you sent, drop the distance and speak to yourself the way someone who loves you would. Same facts, no stranger's eyes.

Where am I treating my own mind as a stranger I need to keep watch on?

Upanishads

The deepest self in you and the ground of all being are not two things looking at each other across a gap. To know one is already to know the other.

Sufism · Rumi

The longing you feel for the beloved is the beloved's longing for you, arriving from the inside. The search and the sought turn out to share one voice.

Zen

The eye cannot see itself as an object, yet nothing is closer to it than seeing. What guides you is not standing outside you watching.
