John 10:18 Meaning No One Takes It Away From Me

No one takes it away from me, but I lay it down by myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. I received this commandment from my Father.

What does John 10:18 mean?

Nothing real can be stolen from a mind, and this is the freedom the ego most fears to hear. What seems to be taken by force, the body, the life, the peace, is only ever released or held by the mind that owns it.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

Nothing real can be stolen from a mind, and this is the freedom the ego most fears to hear. What seems to be taken by force, the body, the life, the peace, is only ever released or held by the mind that owns it. To say no one takes it is to withdraw the last belief that the world has power to victimize, for a mind cannot be robbed of what it alone lays down and alone takes up again.

This is not defiance but remembered strength. The mind that acts from its Source discovers it was never at the mercy of anything outside it; the power it thought had been wrested away was resting in its own hands the whole time.

Father: the Source of the mind's authority, the will it shares and from which its power is drawn.

MANIFESTATION

Manifestation

No outside hand fastens a person to any condition. A man lays down one state and takes up another entirely from within, whatever the world seems to be doing to him. The circumstances press, but they cannot seize the inner feeling unless the feeling is surrendered. Consent is the only door, and it opens only from the inside.

Here is the concrete of it. A man beaten down by failure has not had his freedom stolen; he has laid down the sense of being adequate and picked up the sense of being small. The same power that set that state down can set it aside and lift the other. To know this is to hold the reins nobody else can reach. The self that assumes is the only authority over what a life becomes.

Live John 10:18 today

  1. Find the place where you have been saying something is being done to you, and say the truer sentence instead, that you are choosing to stay, or to go, or to let it be. Even a small honest version of that gives you your feet back.
  2. With one person who gets under your skin, stop handing them the controls. You can answer kindly without agreeing, and you can let the provoking line go past you unanswered.
  3. Under real pressure today, a deadline, a hard call, bad news on the commute, pause before reacting and remember the response is yours to give, not theirs to pull out of you.

Where have I been calling something stolen when I was the one holding it?

Stoicism · Epictetus

Some things are in your power and some are not, and no one can take what is truly yours. They can take your body or your plans, never your judgment or your consent.

Bhagavad Gita 2

Weapons do not cut the self, fire does not burn it. What is real in you was never the sort of thing that could be seized.

Zhuangzi

The man who has given up being a victim cannot be injured by circumstance. Things happen, and he lays them down or takes them up himself.
