John 10:36 Meaning Do You Say of Him Whom

do you say of him whom the Father sanctified and sent into the world, ‘You blaspheme,’ because I said, ‘I am the Son of God?’

What does John 10:36 mean?

They hear him claim oneness with the source of all life, and they call it blasphemy. Why does it offend them so deeply?

Ego v. Being

They hear him claim oneness with the source of all life, and they call it blasphemy. Why does it offend them so deeply? Because they are identified with form, and to a mind that knows itself only as a separate person, the divine must stay far away, up in the sky, never here as your own essence.

Yet to say Son of God is not the ego boasting. It is the recognition that what you are in your depth is not separate from the life that gave rise to you. The same presence some call God is the very awareness looking out of you now. Those who take offense do so because they still believe they are only the small self, and so the truth of who they are becomes the one thing they cannot bear to hear.

Live John 10:36 today

  1. Sit for a minute today and feel the simple fact that you are here and aware, before any detail about your job, your name, your history. That is the part that is not separate from anything.
  2. When someone talks about themselves in a small, dismissive way, do not argue with them. Just treat them as if they were worth something, and let that do the talking.
  3. When you feel yourself shrinking in a meeting or a room full of people more impressive than you, feel your feet on the floor and remember that what you are is not up for their vote.

Why is it easier to believe you are small than to believe you are held?

Upanishads

Thou art that. The thing you have been searching the sky for is the awareness reading this line.

Sufism · al-Hallaj

He said the divine and his own depth were not two, and his age called it an outrage. Those identified with their separateness cannot hear that the sacred is this close.

Zen

Ask what the Buddha is and the answer points back at you. Looking for it outside yourself is like a wave going out to search for water.
