John 11:11 Meaning He Said These Things

He said these things, and after that, he said to them, “Our friend, Lazarus, has fallen asleep, but I am going so that I may awake him out of sleep.”

What does John 11:11 mean?

What the world calls death, love calls sleep, and that single change of name is the whole correction. To the mind grounded in what cannot end, no one has been lost; a brother has only forgotten, drifted into the dream of separation and closed his eyes to the life he shares.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

What the world calls death, love calls sleep, and that single change of name is the whole correction. To the mind grounded in what cannot end, no one has been lost; a brother has only forgotten, drifted into the dream of separation and closed his eyes to the life he shares. Death is fearful only while it is believed to be real. Seen as sleep, it becomes something that can be undone, for a sleeper can be wakened and a dream can be released.

The awakened teacher goes to rouse the one who dreams, offering not a rescue from a real grave but the gentle reminder that he never truly slept away from life. To awaken is to remember that the separation never happened.

Lazarus: the mind that has fallen asleep in the belief of separation, the brother who has forgotten the life he cannot lose. Sleep: the dream of death and division that seems final until love calls it by its right name and it is undone.

EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

To call death sleep is to see clearly. Most people are not truly awake even now. They move through their days lost in thought, identified with the voice in the head, dreaming of past and future while the aliveness of this moment passes unnoticed. This is the deeper sleep.

To be awakened is to become conscious, to feel the presence you are beneath the noise of the mind. When someone calls you back to the Now, you do not gain a new life. You notice the life that was always here, and you open your eyes.

PSYCHOANALYSIS

Psychoanalysis

Calling death a sleep is more than a gentle word. Something in a person can lie dormant, as if asleep, cut off from the light of awareness, and still be alive underneath. What looks finished is often only buried.

The deeper meaning is that a part of a person can be recalled. Whatever has sunk into the dark, forgotten or given up for dead, can be woken and brought back into the daylight of the conscious mind. A buried part of the personality is not gone; with the right call it can return and become active again.

AWARENESS

Indian Guru

Sleep is the condition of nearly everyone walking the streets, doing their work, raising children, all of it happening mechanically while nobody is at home inside. Death is only the visible form of it. The invisible form is the man who has been eating breakfast for forty years and has never once tasted it.

Friendship makes waking possible, because a sleeping man cannot rouse himself; his very effort happens inside the dream. Something has to come from outside the dream and call by name, the one thread a sleeper still holds to himself. Hearing it, the man who was being lived by his habits stirs and looks out.

Live John 11:11 today

  1. Think of someone you have written off today, someone you have quietly filed as gone. Try holding them as asleep instead, as someone still reachable.
  2. When you are with a person who is checked out, talking past you, stuck in their own fog, speak to the part of them that is still awake. People often rise to whoever is addressed.
  3. When a loss comes up today and the heaviness lands, try the gentler word before the final one. Not gone. Just not here, not now, not finished.

Who have I decided is beyond reaching, when they might only need waking?

Zhuangzi

He dreamed he was a butterfly, then woke unsure which was the dream. What you take as plain fact may be a state you can wake from.

Buddhism

The word Buddha just means the one who woke up. The whole teaching treats our ordinary condition as a kind of sleep.

The lover's work is waking, since death is only a turn in the road and we have been dozing through the journey.
