What does John 11:13 mean?

A comfortable interpretation of a hard sentence will keep a person exactly where they already wanted to stay. Words land inside whatever model is already running, and an ambiguous word gets resolved toward the meaning that demands the least.

A comfortable interpretation of a hard sentence will keep a person exactly where they already wanted to stay.

Words land inside whatever model is already running, and an ambiguous word gets resolved toward the meaning that demands the least. Sleep was the reading that kept the road to Judea optional, and men who heard sleep felt relief where Jesus had placed grief, so they answered with the sensible thing a friend says about a nap.

Relief is a state, and states decide what a person does next; theirs made walking into hostile country look unnecessary rather than urgent. He said the harder word plainly a moment later because a model that comfortable will not update on hints. Living at the level of the reading that costs nothing means a person keeps agreeing with what is said and keeps missing what is being asked of him.

Live John 11:13 today

  1. When a message or a line in an article makes you uneasy and you find yourself landing on the mildest possible meaning, pause and ask what the harder reading would be. Then sit with that one for a minute before you decide it is wrong.
  2. Next time someone close to you says something that could be a small complaint or a real one, ask them directly which it is. People often say the gentle version first and wait to see if you want the rest.
  3. When you are tired and a hard request comes in by email or on a group chat, resist the quick reply that treats it as smaller than it is. Read it again slowly before answering, especially if your first reaction was relief.

Where today did you choose the easy reading of something because the real one would have asked you to move?

Zen

A student hears the teacher's hard question and answers it with something clever, and the answer is just a way of staying comfortable. The teaching only lands when the student stops softening it.

Stoicism · Epictetus

People do not get disturbed by events but by the readings they put on events, and the reading they reach for first is usually the one that asks the least of them.

Sufism · Rumi

Most listeners take the word that fits the house they already live in. The word that would make them move gets translated into one that lets them stay.
