John 11:4 Meaning But When Jesus Heard It

But when Jesus heard it, he said, “This sickness is not to death, but for the glory of God, that God’s Son may be glorified by it.”

What does John 11:4 mean?

Sickness seems to point toward death because the mind has taught itself that the body's decay is the final word. But no condition of the body can decide the fate of a mind, for the two belong to different orders entirely, and what happens to form leaves the changeless self untouched.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

Sickness seems to point toward death because the mind has taught itself that the body's decay is the final word. But no condition of the body can decide the fate of a mind, for the two belong to different orders entirely, and what happens to form leaves the changeless self untouched. To say the sickness is not unto death is to withdraw the verdict fear had already passed and to look instead for the correction hidden inside the appearance of loss.

What the ego reads as an ending, love reads as an occasion to reveal that endings are not real. The glory is the shining-through of the truth the body seemed to hide, that the Son cannot die, and every apparent defeat becomes the place where that truth is remembered.

Sickness: the body's appearance of failing, the seeming proof of death that the mind is asked to see past. Son of God: the changeless self the body cannot touch, the innocent reality that no decay can end.

SELF-HELP

Self-Help

Whoever assigns the meaning of a crisis first governs how everyone downstream of it behaves while it is still unfolding.

Nothing about the body changes at the moment Jesus names what the sickness is for. What changes is the category the whole ordeal gets filed under, and the category decides whether the days that follow are lived in panic or in patience.

An illness happening for the glory of God rather than to a family is also what makes the waiting that comes next something other than neglect. A person who postpones meaning until the evidence is in hands their state to whatever the morning's news happens to be, and makes their largest decisions from there.

Live John 11:4 today

  1. If you got a scan result, a diagnosis, a worrying symptom, sit with it today without writing the ending. The news is the news. The story you added to it is the part you can set down.
  2. When someone tells you about their health and you feel the urge to panic with them, stay steady instead. Your calm is more useful to them than your fear.
  3. In a bad hour today, when something feels like it is falling apart, ask what this could be revealing rather than only what it is taking. Then get on with your day.

What have I already decided is the ending, when it might only be the middle?

Weapons do not cut it, fire does not burn it. What you really are is untouched by anything that happens to the body.

Stoicism · Epictetus

I have to die. I do not have to die frightened. The body's fate is not mine to pick, my response is.

When his wife died, Zhuangzi stopped weeping once he saw she had slipped back into the great turning of things, the way seasons change.
