The most honest witness in the room is still only reporting what his model of the world let through.

Sound arrives already sorted by what a person holds to be possible, and that filter was installed long before the moment it gets used. A model with no category for heaven speaking reports weather, sincerely and with no sense of having edited anything, because the editing happens below the level where argument can reach it.

This is why two people leave the same hour with different lives: one of them heard nothing that asked anything and went home, another heard a voice and had to decide what to do about it. A person who never audits their own filter keeps receiving a world with no claim on them in it, and will call that world the facts.

Live John 12:29 today

  1. Pick one thing you are certain about and spend ten minutes reading the best case against it, not the worst one. Watch what your mind does to make the good argument sound weak.
  2. When someone describes an event you were both at and their version is unrecognizable, ask them to keep going instead of correcting them. Their filter will show you the shape of yours.
  3. In a meeting where you have already decided what someone means, hold off on your reply and ask them to say more. The second hearing is often not the same as the first.

What did you hear today and file away as nothing because hearing it properly would have asked something of you?
