John 12:43 · World English Bible
for they loved men’s praise more than God’s praise.
For a mind that hungers for the praise of men, the split has already been chosen. Approval becomes the god it serves, because a mind that believes it is separate feels empty and reaches outside itself to be told it is worthy.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY
For a mind that hungers for the praise of men, the split has already been chosen. Approval becomes the god it serves, because a mind that believes it is separate feels empty and reaches outside itself to be told it is worthy. Yet the crowd can only echo back the guilt the mind already holds, so its praise is thin and never fills.
The praise of God is the memory that worthiness was never in question and never depended on another's eyes. A mind that turns from applause to that quiet certainty stops asking to be seen and begins to see. Nothing is lost in releasing what men think, because their opinion could not make real what love had already made true.

SUFISM
Ḥubb al-jāh: Love of standing among people Al-Ghazali counted the hunger for a good name among the hardest pulls to catch in yourself. Someone can be convinced of something inside and still stay quiet, because saying it out loud would cost them respect. The silence feels like prudence, while the thing being guarded is a position in other people's eyes.
Riyāʾ: Doing good so that people will see it A saying of the Prophet calls this the smaller idol worship he feared most for his followers. The same act, generosity, prayer, plain honesty, can be done for God or done for the room, and only the doer knows which. Once approval becomes the point, the act keeps its shape and loses what made it worth doing.
Whoever seeks God's approval though people are angry, God will spare him what people can do: only one approval can come first The Prophet said this, and its other half is that chasing people's approval against God leaves you handed over to them. Most days the two point the same way, so the split between them stays out of sight. It surfaces in the moment when honesty would cost standing, and a person finds out which approval they had been living on.
Murāqaba: Keeping in mind that God sees you Al-Ghazali treats this steady awareness as the heart's guard. Anyone weighing how a room will react is already answering to that room, minute by minute. When someone remembers a witness who sees the motive as well as the act, the opinions around them fall back into proportion, and a few disapproving faces stop being the last word.
Ikhlāṣ: Sincerity, acting for God alone Al-Ghazali describes it as the work of a lifetime rather than a single decision. A person who has been living on praise cannot stop caring by simply deciding to; the wish for approval keeps returning. Sincerity grows as they keep choosing the deed over the credit for it, until the credit is no longer the reason they act.

SELF-HELP
Whichever approval a person cannot live without is the one quietly writing their conduct.
The reward felt soonest does the deciding, and conviction gets a vote only after. Human approval lands today in a face across the room while God's approval is delayed and unseen, so the nearer pleasure outweighs the greater one on a scale nobody consciously consults. Fear of the closing door sets the state, the state produces caution, caution produces silence, and repeated silence turns a believer into a spectator of their own conviction.
Belief turns decorative this way, real enough to hold and never heavy enough to open a mouth. The weights move only when exclusion is set against a larger pain, the pain of being someone whose word goes quiet whenever it costs, and that one is felt first. Until then they keep every room they were afraid of losing, and the conviction they carried expires unspent.
Christian Psychology lens
Whose approval have you been quietly working for, and what would you do differently without it?
The one who displays himself is not seen clearly, and the one who demands recognition gets nothing lasting from it. The need to be praised is the hole praise cannot fill.
Think of how quickly the people whose applause you want will be gone, and their opinions with them. Your own good conduct is the only thing in your hands.
The truly free person does not go chasing a name. Reputation is borrowed, and whatever is borrowed can always be taken back.
