John 12:47 Meaning If Anyone Listens to My Sayings

If anyone listens to my sayings, and doesn’t believe, I don’t judge him. For I came not to judge the world, but to save the world.

What does John 12:47 mean?

Love does not condemn the mind that fails to hear it, because condemnation is the very sickness love came to heal. Judgment belongs to fear, which needs an enemy and manufactures guilt to have one; love keeps no such account and sees only a mind mistaken, not a mind deserving punishment.

Christian Psychology

Love does not condemn the mind that fails to hear it, because condemnation is the very sickness love came to heal. Judgment belongs to fear, which needs an enemy and manufactures guilt to have one; love keeps no such account and sees only a mind mistaken, not a mind deserving punishment. To save rather than to judge is to look on error and refuse to make it real, holding the other as innocent even while he sleeps in his own accusation.

So the one who does not believe is not thereby damned but simply not yet awake, and love waits without reproach. A mind learns forgiveness by receiving it first, discovering that the teacher it feared would sentence it has come instead to release it. Salvation is nothing more than being seen as guiltless until one can see it too.

  1. Think of a person you have quietly filed away as a bad one, and try holding them for a day as someone who got it wrong instead. See what loosens in you.
  2. When someone close to you messes up today, skip the lecture. They already know. What they need is to be treated as someone capable of better.
  3. If a coworker drops the ball and your first move is to build the case against them, put the case down and ask what happened. Curiosity gets further than a verdict.

Who are you still holding a verdict against, and what is it costing you to keep it?

People cause harm out of confusion, not because they are rotten at the root. Seeing the confusion is what makes mercy possible instead of forced.
