John 13:13 Meaning You Call Me

You call me, ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord.’ You say so correctly, for so I am.

What does John 13:13 mean?

He accepts the titles they give him, Master and Lord, and yet there is no ego in it. Hear how he affirms it: so I am.

EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

He accepts the titles they give him, Master and Lord, and yet there is no ego in it. Hear how he affirms it: so I am. Not I am great, not I deserve your praise, but simply I Am.

The authority they feel in him is the authority of presence itself, the still depth of Being that the restless mind can never command. When you meet someone who is fully awake, you sense it too, a natural weight that needs no title. He lets them call him Lord because that awakened presence truly is meant to guide your life, not as a master standing over you, but as the deepest truth within you taking its rightful place.

Live John 13:13 today

  1. Sometime today, say something true about yourself without inflating or shrinking it. Just the plain fact, no apology attached and no case being made.
  2. In a meeting or group chat, let a small correction about you go by uncontested. See what remains of you when you do not defend the image.
  3. When someone speaks to you with real weight, from a parent, a coworker, your own quiet sense of what is right, stop scrolling and actually let it lead you for the next decision.

Where am I running on borrowed titles instead of what is actually steady in me?

Tao Te Ching 17

The finest leader is barely felt. Things get done, and nobody is being impressed.

Zen

Real authority has nothing to prove. The teacher who needs the title does not yet have the thing the title names.

Stoicism · Marcus Aurelius

He reminded himself that rank was borrowed and could be taken back tomorrow. What he actually was did not depend on what anyone called him.
