John 13:21 Meaning When Jesus Had Said This
When Jesus had said this, he was troubled in spirit, and testified, “Most certainly I tell you that one of you will betray me.”

John 13:21 · World English Bible
When Jesus had said this, he was troubled in spirit, and testified, “Most certainly I tell you that one of you will betray me.”
The higher self is stirred because it foreknows the necessary death of the flesh-nature that will let it rise. The betrayer within is the faculty that hands the body-self over to be crucified, and in this teaching that surrender is an ascent: the ego betrays the flesh so the mind and spirit can rise to the higher life.

ESOTERIC
The higher self is stirred because it foreknows the necessary death of the flesh-nature that will let it rise. The betrayer within is the faculty that hands the body-self over to be crucified, and in this teaching that surrender is an ascent: the ego betrays the flesh so the mind and spirit can rise to the higher life. The trouble in spirit is the tremor before that inward crossing, the knowing that one of the inner circle must play the part that undoes the lower self. One of the 12, the full company of the faculties, carries that office, and the circle is complete only because it includes the one who lets the flesh go. The stirring is not dread of descent but the weight of a rising bought by surrender.
The higher self trembles at the coming release, when the flesh-nature is given up so the spirit can rise.
Betrayer: the inner faculty that surrenders the flesh-self to be crucified so the higher life can rise 12: the full company of the faculties, the complete circle of powers within a person
Esoteric lens
What do you need to give up for the better thing to come?
The teaching is given in the middle of dread, not after it clears. Something has to be laid down for the larger life to begin, and the hand trembles doing it.
The one who sees clearly is still shaken by what must be let go. The grief is not a failure of understanding, it belongs to the letting go.
What looks like loss is often the price of becoming. The thing being taken from you was holding the place of something larger.
