John 14:21 Meaning One Who Has My Commandments and Keeps

One who has my commandments and keeps them, that person is one who loves me. One who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him, and will reveal myself to him.

What does John 14:21 mean?

To keep the word of love is not to obey a rule set over the mind from outside. It is to choose love as the mind's teacher and to let that choice show in how another is seen.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

To keep the word of love is not to obey a rule set over the mind from outside. It is to choose love as the mind's teacher and to let that choice show in how another is seen. The mind that forgives, that looks past attack to the innocence beneath it, has already taken love as its guide, and needs no other proof that it loves.

What such a mind receives is not a distant reward but the natural result of its own choosing. Love reveals itself to the mind that has cleared away the guilt that hid it, and the presence long felt as absent is known again as near.

Commandments: the word of love held as the mind's own guide, not a law imposed from without.

ESOTERIC

The Christ here is not a man outside a person but the higher self buried in every skull, and the commandments are the ordered laws of that inner life, not rules from a distant throne. To keep them is to hold the mind steady on that center until the split between the small self and the source closes. What was hidden then becomes visible in the one who holds it, because the manifesting happens in the head, not the sky.

The love spoken of is the pull of the lower nature toward its own higher octave, and the Father is the unseen ground from which both rise. When attention returns and stays there, the covered light shows its face within.

Commandments: the ordered inner laws of the awakened mind, not decrees from an outside ruler Father: the hidden source in the depths of a person from which the higher self is born

SUFISM

Sufism

Love is measured here by what the hands do when no one applauds, not by the sweet word repeated in private. Someone may claim it a hundred times, yet a tongue that boasts of love while the appetites run loose is only flattering itself. The test is one small promise, kept for its own sake.

See the exchange folded in: the keeper is met by a love returning, and then by an unveiling. Quiet obedience wipes a rusted surface until what was always shining behind it shows. A Face is promised, still to be revealed.

Live John 14:21 today

  1. Think of someone you are quietly keeping a file on. Today, let one item in that file go, not for them, for you.
  2. When someone is short with you, assume there is something going on you cannot see. Answer the person, not the tone.
  3. In a tense email thread, write the reply that assumes good faith. Read it once to remove the jab you slipped in without meaning to.

Who would you have to see differently for your kindness to stop being an effort?

Do not ask whether you are virtuous, ask how you treat the person in front of you. Goodness shows in conduct, not in claims.

People act badly out of ignorance of what is good. See that clearly and anger loses its grip, and you can be kind without pretending.
