John 15:11 Meaning I Have Spoken These Things to You

I have spoken these things to you, that my joy may remain in you, and that your joy may be made full.

What does John 15:11 mean?

Everything love says to the mind is spoken for one reason, that the mind might share in love's own gladness and find that gladness complete in it. This is not a joy that comes and goes with circumstance; it is the steady happiness of a mind that has remembered what it is.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

Everything love says to the mind is spoken for one reason, that the mind might share in love's own gladness and find that gladness complete in it. This is not a joy that comes and goes with circumstance; it is the steady happiness of a mind that has remembered what it is.

Joy is not added to the mind from outside like a reward. It is the natural state of a mind at peace with its source, and love speaks only to remove whatever hid that state from view. When the fears that dimmed it are gone, the fullness that was always there simply shines, and nothing is left wanting.

EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

You have known happiness that depended on something, a piece of good news, a pleasure, an arrival, and watched it drain away as the news grew old and the pleasure faded. That is a fragile thing, tied to conditions, always at the mercy of the next change. Beneath it, though, is another kind of gladness you may have only tasted in still moments: a quiet fullness that arose for no reason at all, simply from being here, awake, present.

This is the joy that remains, because it does not come from what happens. It rises from being itself, from the aliveness of this moment when you are fully in it and not lost in thought. Ordinary happiness has an opposite and comes and goes; this deeper joy has no opposite and is always available the instant you become present. To have your joy be full is to stop chasing the fleeting kind and discover the abiding gladness that was underneath all along, waiting only for your attention to return home.

Live John 15:11 today

  1. Today, find the small gladness that was already there, warm water, the first sip of coffee, a quiet street, and stay with it for ten seconds instead of moving straight on.
  2. Bring your good mood into one conversation instead of waiting for the conversation to give you one. Share the thing that made you laugh, and let it be contagious.
  3. In a hard stretch, a long wait, a tense call, do not try to manufacture cheer. Just set down the one worry you are gripping, and see what is left underneath it.

What have I been waiting for, before I let myself be glad?

Zen

Joy is not something brought in. Clear the room of what was cluttering it and you find the light was already coming through the window.

Tao Te Ching

Muddy water left alone becomes clear. You do not add clarity, you stop stirring.

Stoicism · Marcus Aurelius

Happiness does not live in what happens to you. It lives in the state of your own mind, which no outside thing has permission to enter.
