John 16:12 Meaning I Still Have Many Things to Tell
I still have many things to tell you, but you can’t bear them now.

John 16:12 · World English Bible
I still have many things to tell you, but you can’t bear them now.
Understanding cannot outrun readiness. Truth arrives at the rate consciousness can hold it.
From the Ego v. Being reading below.
The same verse, read by 4 traditions.

EGO & BEING
Understanding cannot outrun readiness.
Truth arrives at the rate consciousness can hold it. Premature teaching gets absorbed by the mind and turned into concept.

MANIFESTATION
The many things unsaid are the states a person cannot yet occupy. Awareness moves from one state to the next, and no one can carry what he has not grown to hold. Nothing is being withheld out of secrecy. The self as it now stands simply cannot bear the fuller truth until feeling has carried it into a higher condition first.
All people are immortal beings passing through states toward the final one, and each stage opens only what the present stage can support. To be unable to bear a truth is to have not yet assumed the self to whom it would be plain. Growth here is not learning more facts but becoming the man to whom those facts are obvious. What cannot be borne now becomes simple the moment a person rises into the state that receives it.

ESOTERIC
The higher self holds more truth than the lower man can yet receive, because understanding opens only as the vessel is made ready to hold it. What cannot be borne now is not withheld out of secrecy but out of measure, the deeper knowing waiting until the centers of a person have matured enough to carry its weight.
Inner teaching arrives in the order the body and mind can absorb it, and the part still bound to the flesh must grow before the full word can be spoken to it. The limit is in the receiver, not in the source.
This passage turns on states within a person rather than named figures, and offers no concrete symbol to decode.

SUFISM
Speak to people according to what they can understand: the listener sets the measure A saying of the Prophet, repeated constantly by teachers in this tradition. Being told that more is coming later can sting, as if you were left outside a closed door while others talked. The person holding back is measuring what you can carry today, and that measuring is itself a form of care.
Istiʿdād: Readiness to receive Ibn Arabi uses this for the capacity a person brings to whatever is offered. Two people can hear the same sentence, and one has room for it while the other hears only words. When something is kept back, the shortage sits in the listener, and capacity happens to be the one thing that grows.
Ḥijāb: The veil Al-Ghazali treats the veil between us and God as mercy as much as concealment, since undimmed light would burn the eye that met it. Hard news given too early flattens a person instead of helping them, because they have nowhere yet to put it. Leaving something covered for a while buys the time a person needs to become able to hear it.
Sharḥ al-ṣadr: The widening of the chest The Quran describes God opening a person's chest, making room inside where there was none. Such room rarely comes from further explanation; it comes from living through the hard stretch itself. A sentence too heavy to hear this year can sound plain, even steadying, once someone has gotten a little further down the road.
Futūḥ: Openings Ibn Arabi named his largest book after these, the understandings that arrive on their own rather than the ones you pry loose. Being told to wait can feel like homework you should be able to force, and the waiting looks like wasted time. Most of what people finally understand about a painful season came to them afterward, quietly, without their having chased it down.
Ego v. Being lens
What are you trying to understand before you are actually ready to live it?
Water is poured only as fast as the cup can take it. The rest is spilled on the floor.
The frog in the well cannot be told the sea. It has to leave the well first.
You are not asked to finish the work, only not to put it down. Growth comes in its own time.
