John 19:26 Meaning Therefore When Jesus Saw His Mother

Therefore when Jesus saw his mother, and the disciple whom he loved standing there, he said to his mother, “Woman, behold, your son!”

What does John 19:26 mean?

The mother is the material and emotional nature that gave the awareness its body, and the beloved disciple is the pure receptive love within the same person, so joining them at the moment of the cross is the binding of feeling to devotion as the lower self is being released. From the height of that surrender, consciousness hands its own tender nature over to the keeping of its highest love, so that what remains after the flesh is given up is cared for by the deepest affection a person holds.

The scene is the sorting of a person's inner household as the old self passes: matter entrusted to love, the receptive heart made guardian of the emotional nature. Nothing is abandoned; the parts of the self are placed in one another's care.

  1. Name one feeling you have been trying to get rid of today, then set it in your own care instead. You do not have to fix it; you have to keep it.
  2. Before something ends, a job, a season, a shared house, hand off clearly what mattered to you to someone who will keep it well. Say out loud why it matters.
  3. When you are stretched thin and want to cut someone loose to make it easier, find a way to place them in good hands instead. Letting go and abandoning are not the same move.
