EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

The doors were shut, and still he came and stood among them. There is something essential here. Presence is not kept out by the barriers a frightened mind builds around itself. Even when you have closed yourself off in doubt, as Thomas had, the deeper reality can rise in the very midst of you, at the still center those walls can never reach.

And what he brings is always the same. Peace. Not a peace that waits for all your questions to be answered or all danger to pass, for the doors were still locked and the fear still fresh. It is the peace that is your own essence, uncovered the moment you become present. It was there behind the closed door the whole time, waiting only to be noticed.

Live John 20:26 today

  1. On a day when you feel shut down and far from yourself, sit with it for two minutes instead of scrolling away from it. The quiet underneath is reachable even on the closed days, maybe especially then.
  2. When someone you care about is in their own locked room, do not argue them out of it. Stay nearby, keep your voice soft, and let your presence be the thing that gets in.
  3. When you are tense and all your questions are still unanswered, stop expecting the calm to come after the answers. Take a slow breath and let it come first.

Where in me is the peace still sitting, behind a door I have kept shut?

The root of stillness is not somewhere you travel to. Stop stirring the water and you find it has been clear underneath the whole time.

Stoicism · Marcus Aurelius

The mind that is not pulled by outer things keeps its own calm, no matter how bolted the door. Nothing outside you can enter the place where your judgments are made.

Clouds cover the sun without touching it. Doubt and fear pass through awareness and leave it exactly as it was.
