John 20:9 Meaning For as Yet They Didn’t Know

For as yet they didn’t know the Scripture, that he must rise from the dead.

What does John 20:9 mean?

Understanding often lags behind the fact it explains. A mind can stand before the evidence of life and still not yet hold the knowledge that would make sense of it, because truth is remembered in stages and the heart accepts before the reasoning catches up.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Understanding often lags behind the fact it explains. A mind can stand before the evidence of life and still not yet hold the knowledge that would make sense of it, because truth is remembered in stages and the heart accepts before the reasoning catches up. Not yet knowing is not the same as being wrong; it is the honest space between an experience and its meaning.

What is being learned is that love does not stay dead, that nothing real ever truly ended. This cannot be argued into a mind; it dawns. The delay described here is gentle, the ordinary pace at which a frightened mind lets a truth it has already glimpsed become a truth it can rest in.

The scripture: the remembered truth already written in the mind, waiting to be recognized rather than newly learned.

Rising from the dead is the ascent of the buried spirit within a person, the awakening of the higher consciousness out of the tomb of the body. Not yet knowing the scripture is the condition before understanding dawns: the deeper meaning coded in the writings has not opened, so resurrection is looked at as an outward event rather than lived as one's own rising.

Understanding arrives when the coded text is read from within, and the buried life stands up inside the one who reads it.

The dead: the dormant, sunk self entombed in flesh and habit, awaiting its own waking Scripture: the coded writing whose inner meaning stays sealed until it is read from within

Live John 20:9 today

  1. When something good or hard has just happened and you cannot yet say what it means, resist writing the conclusion. Let the day carry it unexplained.
  2. When someone you love is in the middle of a change they cannot articulate, stop asking them to summarize it. Sit with them in the half-formed version.
  3. Under pressure to have an answer right now, say honestly: I don't know yet, I'll know more by Thursday. Not knowing out loud is more useful than a confident guess.

What am I already living that I cannot explain yet, and can I let it stay unexplained a while longer?
