John 3:36 Meaning One Who Believes in the Son Has

One who believes in the Son has eternal life, but one who disobeys the Son won’t see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.

What does John 3:36 mean?

Eternal life is held now by anyone trusting the Son, in hand before dying and before any improvement. That trusting leans on a person rather than on a set of statements about him.

Eternal life is held now by anyone trusting the Son, in hand before dying and before any improvement. That trusting leans on a person rather than on a set of statements about him.

The word behind the refusal carries disobedience, a no said to someone with a claim on you. To see life, in the speech of that day, meant having a share in it, so the one refusing never gets any. 'Abideth' means it stays. God's settled opposition to sin, not a flare of temper, already rests on that person and remains on him until he trusts the Son.

Live John 3:36 today

  1. Instead of waiting to feel better before you trust anything, do one small thing today as though it is already settled, and let the feeling arrive late or not at all.
  2. There is a person you owe a yes to, a call, a decision, an answer you keep not giving. Give it today, plainly, even by text.
  3. When you catch yourself saying "once this quarter is over," name one piece of the life you are deferring and put ten minutes of it in today.

What am I treating as something to collect later that is actually on offer now?

The same truth in other traditions

Hinduism · Upanishads

Freedom is not a wage paid after death. If it is real it is real now, in this body, this afternoon.

Stoicism · Seneca

Stop postponing life until you are ready for it, because the postponing is the loss. The one who keeps saying later has already chosen.

Buddhism · Dhammapada

Actions ripen into the life you are living, not only into some ledger later. A no you keep saying becomes the room you live in.
