Don’t marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born anew.’
The mind bound to the world hears that it must be born again and recoils, as though asked to accomplish the impossible. Yet there is no cause for wonder or dread in it, for the new birth demands nothing that is hard.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY
The mind bound to the world hears that it must be born again and recoils, as though asked to accomplish the impossible. Yet there is no cause for wonder or dread in it, for the new birth demands nothing that is hard. It is not a second passage through the flesh but a simple change of mind, the willingness to see with love where before there was only fear.
What astonishes the ego is precisely what reassures the awakening mind. Nothing in the body must be undone, no long labor is required. The being born again is only the laying down of one teacher and the taking up of another, and any mind can choose this in the instant it decides that fear has taught it long enough.

EGO & BEING
The puzzlement comes from hearing the words as being about the body, and no one can return to the womb. But this birth leaves the body untouched. It means the falling away of the self a person has assembled from thought, memory and role, so something deeper can wake.
And the word must carries no threat. No second door exists, because what has to fall away cannot be improved into something else. When the old identity loosens, a simpler being emerges, one that waited beneath the accumulated self all along.

MANIFESTATION
A second birth is meant, and it has nothing to do with the body you now wear or the age you have reached. The first birth brought you out of a woman into the world. The second brings you out of your own skull, the bony dome that is the tomb where the creative power sleeps, into an awareness of who you are. Nicodemus, the man of reason spoken to here, cannot grasp this, because reason measures only what the senses report and this happens below the senses.
The power that does the work is your own imagination, buried in you and waiting to wake. What you assume yourself to be and hold to until it feels natural hardens into fact, and that hardening is the birth. A man stays what he was until a new state is conceived within him and carried until it comes forth. The change is not the old self improved but a wholly new one arriving from inside you.

ESOTERIC
Being born again is not a single event in the sky after death but a shift of consciousness from the left-brain mind bound to tradition and physical origins into the right-brain harmony where the higher self wakes. The word must is fixed law, not invitation: no one enters the inner kingdom carrying only the old sleeping mind.
Spoken to a ruler who can think of birth only as flesh coming from a mother's body, the teaching turns him inward. The second birth happens now, inside the living head, as the true self rises out of the outer nature it had mistaken for the whole of itself.
Born again: the higher self waking out of the ordinary sleeping mind within the living body Ruler (Nicodemus): the mind that thinks only in terms of the body's physical origins Flesh: the outer, lower nature mistaken for the whole self

What have I made complicated that I could simply choose differently in the next minute?
There is nowhere to travel and nothing to acquire. The turning takes less time than a breath, and people spend years preparing for a step that was always one step.
The way is plain and close at hand. People step over it looking for something harder, because they cannot believe anything this simple could be it.
You do not have to earn your way home. You only have to stop insisting you are lost.
