CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY
If God is Spirit, then the mind cannot meet Him through the body or its offerings. What is wholly formless is not approached by form. The mind that keeps searching for God in objects and observances is looking in the one place He cannot be, and so its longing goes unanswered.
To worship in spirit and in truth is to recognize that the meeting takes place within, where the mind and its Source share the same nature. When the mind remembers it is spirit, it discovers there was never any distance to cross.
Spirit: the true nature the mind shares with its Source, formless and undivided, the ground on which alone God can be known

EGO & BEING
The mind wants to give everything a shape, even the formless. It builds an image, a location, a figure seated somewhere beyond the sky, because thought can only handle what it can picture. But spirit has no image; it is the aware presence out of which every person, thought, and object arises.
To worship in spirit is to stop reaching for a mental picture and rest instead in direct awareness, the same awareness reading these words right now. Truth here is not a doctrine to accept but a contact with what actually is, prior to belief. Meet that formless presence directly, without the go-between of an image, and you are worshipping the only way that is actually possible.

MANIFESTATION
God is Spirit, and Spirit is your own imagination, the invisible power that makes solid whatever it enters and dwells in. To say God is Spirit is to say the maker of your life is not a figure on a throne but the imagining going on within you now. He has no location a hand could point to, because he is the awareness by which you point at all.
To worship in spirit and in truth is to give your inner attention to what you want as though it were already so, and to feel it fully rather than merely think it. Bowing to an outer image, begging a distant power, is worship in form only and moves nothing. The man who turns inward and assumes the answered state, feeling its presence, is worshipping the one power there is. A person honors God by using imagination as the maker it has always been.

ESOTERIC
God is not a person or a place but the pure formless awareness that fills a body from within, and worship that reaches it cannot work through outward rite or building. Spirit is the invisible breath-life at the core of consciousness, and truth is the inner reality of a person stripped of pretense and borrowed belief. To worship in spirit and in truth is to turn inward to that living center and meet it as it actually is, without idol or ceremony standing between. The formless can only be known by the formless part of oneself.
The divine is met not in temples or ceremonies but by turning inward to the pure awareness at one's own center and knowing it directly.

PSYCHOANALYSIS
To call God spirit points at something real inside the mind, a living force that moves a person from within, not an object off in the sky. Outer rituals only touch the surface. What a person truly seeks has always been in his own depths.
Worshipping in spirit means turning inward to meet that force where it lives. Worshipping in truth means bringing the whole self, including the parts a person would rather hide. Someone who prays wearing only his respectable face is praying to a mask. Honest worship begins when he drops that mask, because that force meets him only when he comes as his whole, undivided self.

SUFISM
Tanzīh: Holding God beyond every likeness Ibn Arabi uses this word for the side of God that no image or location can hold. People argue over the correct place and form of worship because underneath they picture someone who can sit closer to one address than another, and dropping that picture takes the ground out from under the argument. Nearness stops being about where a person stands and becomes about what happens in them while they stand there.
God does not look at your outward forms, he looks at your hearts: the inside carries the weight Sufis return to this saying of the Prophet constantly. A person can get every outward detail right, the words, the timing, the posture, and still be somewhere else entirely inside. It shifts the weight of worship off how the act looked and onto what the person meant while doing it, which is the part nobody watching can grade.
Ḥuḍūr al-qalb: The heart being present Al-Ghazali uses this for attention that arrives where the body already is. He said the parts of a prayer your mind skipped through are the parts you did not pray at all. Anyone who has finished something devotional and realized they spent it planning dinner knows the gap he means. Presence means the mind staying with what the hands are doing.
Ikhlāṣ: Sincerity Al-Ghazali treats this as the cleanness of the motive under an act. Worship picks up passengers easily: wanting to look devout, wanting to belong, wanting to be right against people who do it differently. The Prophet warned that showing off in worship is a lesser idolatry, and sincerity is what remains when those passengers get off, one reason standing where there were several.
Worship God as if you see him, and if you cannot see him, he sees you: worship happens in his presence The Prophet gave this answer when asked what excellence in faith means, and Sufis have treated it as the whole path since. Being with someone you love changes how you carry yourself, with nobody having to say a word about it. Worship under that awareness needs no correcting from outside, because the sense of being seen straightens it from within, and the person quietly stops performing for anyone else.
Christian Psychology lens
What have you been expecting a place, a thing or an achievement to give you that was never stored there?
The Tao has no shape to look at and no sound to listen for, so eyes and ears come back empty. It is known by becoming quiet enough to be it.
The self you are looking for is not an object anywhere in the world, because it is the one doing the looking. When the seeker understands that, the search ends where it started.
Rumi said he looked for God in temples and on mountains and found nothing, then looked in his own heart and found Him there. The place you never searched was the only address.
