John 5:31 Meaning If I Testify About Myself

If I testify about myself, my witness is not valid.

What does John 5:31 mean?

A state of consciousness that only points back to itself cannot confirm itself. The lower personality speaking on its own behalf, closing the loop with no reference above it, produces nothing a person can trust, because the ego is both judge and defendant in the same voice.

Esoteric

A state of consciousness that only points back to itself cannot confirm itself. The lower personality speaking on its own behalf, closing the loop with no reference above it, produces nothing a person can trust, because the ego is both judge and defendant in the same voice.

What validates an inner state is a second and higher witness: the spirit within, standing apart from the self it observes. Truth in a person is never the self applauding the self. It arrives only when something greater than the small mind confirms what the small mind claims, so the reckoning is made from above and not from within the same closed voice.

Live John 5:31 today

  1. Catch yourself the next time you are building a case for why you were right. Set the case down and honestly ask how it looked from the other side.
  2. Ask one person you trust what they actually think of something you have been defending. Then listen all the way through without explaining yourself.
  3. When an argument heats up and you hear yourself repeating how reasonable you are being, stop and let the claim go unfinished. Being right is not the same as being true.

What have I been proving to myself lately because no one else would confirm it?

Do not announce your own progress. Show it in how you act, and let others be the judge of what you have become.

Tao Te Ching

The one who praises himself has nothing to stand on. Real worth does not need to describe itself.

Zen

Ask the student who is sure he understands, and he does not. The mind cannot grade its own exam.
