EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

When a human being awakens, presence radiates from them like light, and those nearby feel it. Something in them recognizes what they truly are. Yet the mind grows restless. It rejoices in another's stillness for a season, then turns back to its noise and its endless wanting.

The light was never meant to be admired from outside. It shines in one person to remind you it also burns in you. Lasting peace does not come from rejoicing in someone else's presence. It comes when you become present enough to find that same light as your own awareness.

Live John 5:35 today

  1. When you feel calm near someone, a friend, a voice in a podcast, pause and ask what in you is answering. That steadiness is yours, not theirs.
  2. Instead of telling a friend how great some teacher or author is, tell them one thing you have actually lived. Let your own calm do the talking.
  3. In a tense meeting, stop scanning for the person who will steady the room and be that quiet yourself, even for thirty seconds.

Whose light am I admiring instead of trusting my own?

The same truth in other traditions

Zen

A teacher pointing at the moon is useful, but if you keep staring at the finger you miss the sky. The pointing was never the point.

Sufism · Rumi

You search for a light outside yourself, going from door to door, while the lamp you are looking for is burning in your own chest.

Buddhism

Be a lamp unto yourself. Take refuge in your own awareness rather than in anyone else, however bright they seem.
