John 5:44 Meaning How Can You Believe

A mind cannot rest in truth while it lives on the approval traded back and forth between separate selves. That kind of honor is the ego's currency, given and taken to prop up an image, and it binds each mind to the judgment of others in an endless anxious exchange. Whoever depends on being esteemed by the world has handed his worth to the very system of separation that keeps him from believing anything real.

There is a worth that does not come from comparison, given by love and never withdrawn. To seek that alone is to be freed from the marketplace of opinion, because a mind that knows its value from its Source has nothing left to win from anyone. The question here is really an offer of release, showing a mind why its faith stays weak and where steadier ground has waited all along.

God: the loving Source that grants a worth beyond comparison, the honor no other mind can give or take away

Ḥubb al-jāh: Love of standing in other people's eyes Al-Ghazali counted the hunger for other people's good opinion among the hardest appetites to shake. Once your worth comes from what the group thinks, any truth that would lower you there becomes expensive to accept. The mind stops weighing things honestly and starts protecting your place.

Riyāʾ: Doing religious things so people will see them The outside of the act stays the same and only the reason behind it moves. Someone can pray, give, and speak carefully for years, with all of it aimed at the people watching. Religion stays full and busy while the part meant to be between them and God quietly empties out.

All honor belongs to God: the praise people trade is borrowed The Quran puts the whole supply in one place. People can raise you on Monday and forget you by Friday, because the honor was never theirs to hand out. Someone who has taken this in stops building a life around a rating that other people control.

Whoever seeks God's approval at people's cost is taken care of: only one approval can be chased The other half of this saying of the Prophet is that whoever pleases people at God's expense gets left to them. The trap closes slowly: the more you spend keeping everyone happy, the more you need them to stay happy. Their good opinion has to be earned again every day, and the work never finishes.

Ikhlāṣ: Sincerity, doing it for God alone Al-Ghazali described this as having one motive where there used to be two. The test is private: whether you would still do the thing if nobody ever heard about it, and still do it if it made you look bad. Most people who check honestly find a mix, and the checking is what begins to sort it out.

Bury your existence in the earth of obscurity: what is never hidden comes out unfinished Ibn Ata Allah compared a person to a seed. Work done where nobody claps has time to become solid, since none of it is being shaped by how it looks from outside. A person with some part of their life that no one sees has somewhere to stand when the room turns against them.

Where a person draws their significance decides in advance which truths they can afford to believe.

Approval traded back and forth inside a group becomes the supply line for significance, and a supply line gets protected. Once standing is the source, any conviction that would cost standing gets screened out before it reaches the level of a decision, which is why the refusal to believe never feels like fear from the inside. It feels like discernment.

Glory that comes from the only God cannot be withheld by a peer, which is what makes it usable as a foundation and what frees a person to be persuaded. Keeping the human source costs someone the ability to change their mind about anything that matters, including the evidence standing in front of them.
