Christian Psychology

Increase begins the moment the small gift is placed in love's hands and met not with worry but with thanks. Gratitude is the turn from scarcity to abundance, and in that shift the little becomes enough and more than enough. Nothing was added to the loaves. The mind that held them simply changed the teacher through whom it looked.

Then what has been received is given, and in the giving it does not shrink but flows. Love passes through one mind to another and loses nothing on the way, so that each receives as much as it is willing to take. What is shared here is not divided into smaller portions but multiplied, because in truth there was never any lack at all.

Loaves: the small offering that becomes abundant once received by love with thanks rather than counted in fear Fishes: the gift that multiplies as it is shared, losing nothing in the giving because love is not diminished by being given Disciples: the parts of the mind that receive love first and then pass it on, the channels through which abundance flows

Live John 6:11 today

  1. Before your first meal today, stop for ten seconds and be glad for it instead of eating over a screen. The food does not change; your relationship to having enough does.
  2. When someone gives you something today, time, a favor, good news, pass a piece of it on within the hour rather than storing it.
  3. In a hard stretch of the day, name three things that are actually working. Do it before you try to fix anything, and see how differently you approach the fixing.

What would shift if I thanked for what I have in my hands before counting what is missing?

The same truth in other traditions

Stoicism · Marcus Aurelius

Do not dwell on what is missing. Take up what is already in your hands and count it, and it turns out to be the greater part of what you wanted.

Buddhism · mudita

Gladness at another's good is treated as something to be cultivated, because joy met with joy grows instead of dividing. This is why generosity is practiced as a gain rather than a loss.

Sufism · Rumi

Giving thanks for abundance, he said, is sweeter than the abundance itself. Gratitude is the opening, not the receipt handed over afterward.
