John 6:26 Meaning Jesus Answered Them

Jesus answered them, “Most certainly I tell you, you seek me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate of the loaves, and were filled.

What does John 6:26 mean?

A hunger that never gets named correctly will keep a person close to the one who feeds it and no closer.

Being told the real driver behind your own behavior is the least welcome useful thing a person can receive. The crowd would have said reverence, and meant it, because people assemble their motives after the fact out of whatever sounds worthy, while the actual driver is whichever need got fed last.

Certainty met physically is powerful: a filled stomach sets the expectation, the expectation moves the feet, and the movement gets narrated as faith. Jesus says it out loud because a pursuit running on loaves cannot become growth or contribution while it goes unnamed. A man who never hears the true reason he does things spends his life mistaking his appetites for his convictions.

Live John 6:26 today

  1. Think of one thing you did this week that you would describe as generous or principled, then ask honestly what you got out of it. The answer does not make it bad, it makes it visible.
  2. When someone thanks you today, ask yourself quietly whether you wanted the thanks. If you did, let that be fine and let it be known to you.
  3. Next time you feel pulled toward your phone, a person, a snack, a purchase, name the actual hunger underneath before you act on it, out loud if you can.

What am I calling love or loyalty that is really just the place where I get fed?

Buddhism

Craving dressed as devotion is still craving. Looking straight at what you actually want, rather than the noble version of it, is where the real practice begins.

Stoicism · Marcus Aurelius

Look at the thing itself and name it plainly, stripped of the story you have wrapped around it. Most of what drives us falls apart under an honest description.

Sufism · Rabia

She prayed to be shown whether she sought God for the reward or for God. The question matters more than the devotion it interrupts.
