John 6:6 Meaning He Said This to Test Him

He said this to test him, for he himself knew what he would do.

What does John 6:6 mean?

Love never asks a question because it is uncertain. When it seems to test a mind, it is not seeking information but revealing to that mind what it still believes.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

Love never asks a question because it is uncertain. When it seems to test a mind, it is not seeking information but revealing to that mind what it still believes. The seeming difficulty is offered so the frightened part can watch itself reach for scarcity and lack, and thereby see the belief it did not know it held. The one who asks already knows the abundance that is coming.

This is how every apparent problem is used by the teacher of love. It is not a trial set to catch a mind failing but a mirror held up so the mind can meet its own fear in the open. Nothing is unknown to love, and nothing is in doubt. The whole purpose of the test is to bring what was hidden into the light, where it can be answered.

Live John 6:6 today

  1. When something small goes wrong today, a late train, a dead battery, a file that will not open, watch your first inner sentence before you fix anything. That sentence is the information.
  2. When someone asks you a question you find uncomfortable, stay with it one beat longer than you want to. They may be showing you something you had not looked at.
  3. Under a tight deadline, listen for the voice that says you cannot do this. Let it speak without arguing, then begin anyway and see whether it was telling the truth.

What did today's small trouble show me that I already believed?

The same truth in other traditions

Bhagavad Gita

Krishna already knows the outcome, yet he draws out Arjuna's despair so Arjuna can hear it spoken aloud. The questioning is not for the teacher's benefit but to bring the fear into the open.

Zen · the koan

A koan is not a riddle the teacher needs solved. It is a mirror set in front of the student so the mind can watch exactly where it grips.

Stoicism · Epictetus

Difficulty does not reveal your character to the universe. It reveals your character to you, which is the only place the news was needed.
