John 6:60 Meaning Therefore Many of His Disciples

Therefore many of his disciples, when they heard this, said, “This is a hard saying! Who can listen to it?”

What does John 6:60 mean?

The powers gathered around the inner Christ are the trained faculties of a person, the disciplined thoughts and habits that follow the awakening light for a while. They can walk beside it as long as it speaks of comfort, but when the teaching turns to eating flesh and drinking blood, to consuming the very body one is made of, those faculties recoil.

The outer ear cannot take in a word aimed at the inner organs.

Hardness here is the resistance of a mind still bound to the literal, still hearing with the senses instead of the understanding. The saying is hard because it asks the whole system to feed on itself, to become the substance it seeks. What blocks a person is not the difficulty of the words but a hearing that stops at the surface of the skin.

  1. When something you read today makes you uncomfortable, stay with it for five more minutes instead of scrolling on. The reaction is information, not a reason to close the tab.
  2. In a conversation where you feel yourself bristling, say "tell me more" before you say anything else. Let the person finish the thought your defenses want to cut off.
  3. When feedback lands badly at work, hold off on the reply for an hour. The part of you that wants to argue is hearing the surface, and the part that can use it needs time to wake up.

What truth have I dismissed as too hard, when the real trouble was that I did not want it?

Zen

A koan is built to break the mind that wants the literal answer. The frustration is not a sign you are failing, it is the sound of the surface hearing giving way.

Sufism · Rumi

The ear that hears only the words misses the music. Some things are spoken to a place in you that opens later, not to the part that wants it explained now.

When the lesser student hears of the way they laugh out loud. If they did not laugh, it would not be the way.
