John 6:9 Meaning There Is a Boy Here Who Has

“There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish, but what are these among so many?”

What does John 6:9 mean?

The little that is offered seems laughable against the size of the need, and the mind dismisses it before love has even touched it. This is how fear treats every small willingness.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

The little that is offered seems laughable against the size of the need, and the mind dismisses it before love has even touched it. This is how fear treats every small willingness. It measures the gift against the lack, finds it absurdly insufficient, and asks what such a trifle could possibly do among so many. The question already contains its own despair.

Yet what the mind holds cheap is exactly what love asks for. It does not require a great supply, only a small honest willingness placed in its hands. The loaves and fishes are meager only to the eye that counts. To the teacher of abundance they are enough, because increase was never in the amount offered but in the love that receives it. What looks too little to matter is the very thing through which plenty will come.

Barley loaves: the small ordinary willingness the mind offers, judged too little by fear but received by love as enough Fishes: the modest gift held cheap by the counting mind, waiting to be multiplied by the teacher of abundance

Live John 6:9 today

  1. Do the smallest honest version of the thing you keep putting off, five minutes, one paragraph, one dish. Let it be laughably small instead of nothing.
  2. Send the short message you think is too little to bother sending. Three sentences to one person often lands heavier than you expect.
  3. When a problem at work looks far bigger than anything you can do about it, pick the one piece that is genuinely yours and handle that piece today.

What small thing have I been holding back because I decided it was not enough to matter?

The same truth in other traditions

Tao Te Ching 64

A journey of a thousand miles begins under one foot, and a great tree starts as something you could pull up with two fingers. What looks too slight to count is where everything actually begins.

Zen

A student complained that his effort was too small to matter, and the teacher pointed to the single drop that had worn a hollow in the stone step. Smallness is not the problem; dismissing it is.

Hinduism · Bhagavad Gita 9:26

A leaf, a flower, a little water offered with real willingness is received fully. What is asked for is the honesty of the gift, not its size.
