John 7:23 Meaning If a Boy Receives Circumcision

If a boy receives circumcision on the Sabbath, that the law of Moses may not be broken, are you angry with me, because I made a man completely healthy on the Sabbath?

What does John 7:23 mean?

The mind under the ego will defend a small ceremony and rage against a whole healing, straining at the form while the substance escapes it. It permits the cutting that keeps a rule and condemns the mending that makes a man complete, because the ego prefers a partial gesture it can control to a wholeness it cannot claim as its own.

Christian Psychology

The mind under the ego will defend a small ceremony and rage against a whole healing, straining at the form while the substance escapes it. It permits the cutting that keeps a rule and condemns the mending that makes a man complete, because the ego prefers a partial gesture it can control to a wholeness it cannot claim as its own.

Anger at the one who heals is fear of what healing means, for if a mind can be made entirely whole, then the whole system of measured merit falls away. What offends the ego is not that a law was bent but that love asked nothing and gave everything, and this is the very generosity the fearful mind cannot forgive.

Sabbath: the appointed time set apart, treated by fear as a boundary to guard rather than a rest to receive. Circumcision: the small permitted cutting, the partial fix the mind allows because it costs it nothing. Man made whole: the mind restored to completeness, the healing the ego resists because it leaves nothing to earn.

  1. Today, when you are halfway through your own routine and someone actually needs something, let the routine lose. The schedule will survive it.
  2. If a friend or family member does something generous in a way you would not have chosen, say thank you and stop there. Do not correct the form of a good thing.
  3. At work, when a rule and an obvious kindness collide on something small, choose the kindness and say plainly why. Do not hide behind the policy.

Where are you guarding a procedure that was supposed to be serving someone?
