His brothers therefore said to him, “Depart from here and go into Judea, that your disciples also may see your works which you do.

What does John 7:3 mean?

The brethren urging him toward a public showing are the unbelieving voices in a person, the reasoning states that trust only what can be paraded before onlookers. They want the works put on stage for others to see and confirm.

MANIFESTATION

Manifestation

The brethren urging him toward a public showing are the unbelieving voices in a person, the reasoning states that trust only what can be paraded before onlookers. They want the works put on stage for others to see and confirm. That craving for outward witness is the very disbelief it pretends to cure, because the creative work is done within and does not perform on demand.

Judaea rests on Judah, which means praise, the inner state of thankful assumption. The push is really a push to leave the quiet inner conviction and go seek approval outside. What the mind labels doing is the silent claiming of the wish fulfilled, and it needs no audience. A person carries on his work in inner speech, in the states he assumes and feels to be so, and those states become fact whether or not an onlooker ever sees them form. The work happens within, and there alone it is done.

Live John 7:3 today

  1. Do one thing well today that no one will see, and resist the small urge to mention it later. The urge to mention it is the part worth watching.
  2. When something good happens, hold off on the group chat for one day. Keep it to yourself and see whether it feels smaller or steadier than usual.
  3. When someone pushes you to prove yourself, show the receipts, demonstrate, perform, answer the real question and skip the performance. Your work does not need a stage to be real.

What would I still do if nobody ever found out I had done it?

Tao Te Ching 2

The wise person does the work and does not claim credit for it. Because nothing is claimed, nothing is lost.

The higher kind of giving is the kind where neither the giver nor the receiver is known. The good is done in full, and the audience is removed from it entirely.

When you do a kind thing, be like the vine that produces grapes and then asks for nothing. It does not go looking for someone to confirm the harvest.
