EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

You will seek me and not find me. There is a deep truth hidden here. What you are truly looking for cannot be found by seeking, because the very act of seeking throws your attention forward into time, into some imagined elsewhere, while what you long for is here, in the aliveness of this moment.

Where I am, you cannot come, not because a door is closed but because the seeking mind can never enter the present. It lives in past and future and knows only wanting. To arrive where presence is, the seeking itself has to stop. You reach the Now the moment you stop searching and let this present moment be enough.

AWARENESS

Indian Guru

Seeking is itself the barrier. Whoever goes out looking has assumed the treasure lies somewhere else, and every step in that direction adds distance. The crowd wanting to lay hands on him wanted an object, something to be located and held, and awareness is never caught in that net.

Where he stands is not a place a person travels to. It is what remains when the traveler is absent. The ego is kept out by its own nature and not by any refusal, since arriving would mean it had ended. The searching has to exhaust itself, and then what was looked for is found where the looking began.

  1. Catch yourself opening a new tab or app looking for something you cannot name. Close it, and sit with the restlessness for one full minute without feeding it.
  2. On your commute, put the podcast away for five minutes and let the ride be the whole thing, not the waiting room before the real part.
  3. In the grocery line, when you reach for your phone to make the wait go away, let your hand stay still. Feel the floor, hear the room, and let this minute be enough.

What am I chasing that is already here if I stop reaching for it?
