John 7:52 Meaning They Answered Him

They answered him, “Are you also from Galilee? Search, and see that no prophet has arisen out of Galilee.”

What does John 7:52 mean?

A rule you have never checked will end your search before you have taken a single step into it. A geography hardens into a law once enough people repeat it, the law sets what feels worth examining, and what feels worth examining sets what a person is capable of finding.

A rule you have never checked will end your search before you have taken a single step into it.

A geography hardens into a law once enough people repeat it, the law sets what feels worth examining, and what feels worth examining sets what a person is capable of finding. Men who prided themselves on rigor kept one premise exempt from the rigor, and the exempt premise did all the deciding.

Nothing about that rule had been tested. It was inherited, it felt certain, and it functioned as the edge of the possible, which is how a fence gets mistaken for the horizon. The cost is exact: the man in front of them could not be weighed at all, because the category he would have to occupy had already been declared empty.

Live John 7:52 today

  1. Write down one thing you are completely sure of about yourself, your family, or your work, then ask where you got it and whether you ever actually checked.
  2. Today, let one person tell you something that contradicts what you believe about them without reaching for the explanation that keeps your version intact.
  3. When you catch yourself saying people like that always, or that never works, stop mid sentence and ask whether you know that or inherited it.

What have I ruled out so completely that I would miss it if it were standing right in front of me?

He was called wise only because he knew that he did not know. The useful move is finding the thing you were sure of and holding it up to the light.

You cannot discuss the ocean with a frog who has only known a well, because the frog is limited by the space it lives in. The limit does not feel like a limit from inside.
