John 7:9 Meaning Having Said These Things to Them

Having said these things to them, he stayed in Galilee.

What does John 7:9 mean?

When others urged him to go, to prove himself, to act on their timetable, he abode still and remained where he was. This is what it means to act from inner stillness rather than from the restless pushing of the mind.

Ego v. Being

When others urged him to go, to prove himself, to act on their timetable, he abode still and remained where he was. This is what it means to act from inner stillness rather than from the restless pushing of the mind.

The ego is always in a hurry, insisting something must happen now to secure its future. When you are rooted in presence, you move only when the moment itself calls for it, and until then you remain still without anxiety, at peace with being where you are.

  1. When your phone buzzes and your hand reaches for it on its own, let it buzz for a few seconds. Finish what you are doing first, then choose to pick it up.
  2. Someone in a group chat wants an answer right now. Type nothing, wait until you actually know what you think, then reply.
  3. In traffic, when the lane next to you moves and yours does not, let your shoulders drop. You will arrive, and the pushing inside you was never making the cars move.

Where am I hurrying because someone else is impatient, not because the moment calls for it?

The wise do not rush muddy water clear. They wait, and stillness does what stirring cannot.

Nothing is gained by hurrying what is not yet ready. Do what this hour asks of you and let the next hour ask for itself.
