AWARENESS

Indian Guru

Standing in a hostile circle, hearing himself accused, he simply does not defend. That refusal is the whole teaching. The mind lives on being right, and every argument it wins reinforces the very center that is its suffering, so the strongest position available is to have no position to protect.

Leaving the seeking and the judging to another is not resignation and not a claim of superiority. It is what happens when nobody remains inside who needs the verdict to go a certain way. Reputation becomes weather, coming and going without touching what is underneath. A man who has stopped defending himself has arrived at a rest the debating mind has never once tasted.

Live John 8:50 today

  1. The next time a criticism lands and you start writing the defense in your head, let the sentence go unwritten. Sit with the sting for a minute and see what is actually hurt.
  2. In your next disagreement with someone close, try not winning. Let them have the last word and see whether anything real was actually lost.
  3. When someone questions your work in front of others, resist the quick justification. Say you will look at it, and let your reputation take care of itself.

What would today feel like if I had nothing to protect?

Tao Te Ching 22

The one who does not show off gets seen, and the one who does not argue cannot be argued with. Not contending is not weakness, it is the one position nobody can push over.

Stoicism · Epictetus

If someone tells you another person is speaking badly of you, do not defend yourself. Just say they clearly did not know all your faults, or they would have mentioned more.

Zen

Accused of fathering a child, the master said only, is that so, and raised it. When the truth came out and they came to apologize, he said only, is that so, and handed the child back.
