John 9:4 Meaning I Must Work the Works of Him

I must work the works of him who sent me while it is day. The night is coming, when no one can work.

What does John 9:4 mean?

There is a readiness in the mind that must be used while it is present, for willingness comes in seasons and is not always felt. Day is the state in which the mind can still see clearly enough to accept correction and let love work through it; night is the closing of that openness, when fear draws the shade and the mind forgets it ever wished to heal.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

There is a readiness in the mind that must be used while it is present, for willingness comes in seasons and is not always felt. Day is the state in which the mind can still see clearly enough to accept correction and let love work through it; night is the closing of that openness, when fear draws the shade and the mind forgets it ever wished to heal. The work is simply the undoing of illusion, done in the hour the mind is willing.

The urgency is not toward effort but toward acceptance while acceptance is possible. When willingness is given, the mind is asked to use it, for the opening does not stay forever.

Day: the state of willingness in which the mind can still receive correction and let love act. Night: the closing of that willingness, when fear obscures the mind and the work of healing cannot be taken up.

Live John 9:4 today

  1. When a soft moment comes today, a sudden urge to forgive someone or let something go, act on it in the next ten minutes. Say it, write it, decide it. That mood will not be there tonight.
  2. If you feel warm toward someone, send the message now rather than when you have time to word it properly. The warmth is the window, not the wording.
  3. Under pressure you will feel yourself close up and get hard. When you catch that happening, stop and admit you are not open right now, instead of making decisions from behind the shutters.

What did I feel ready to let go of this week, and is that opening still there?

The same truth in other traditions

Buddhism · Dhammapada

The teaching warns against saying tomorrow, since the mind's openness today is not promised again. Willingness is treated as a rare weather, used while it lasts.

Sufism · Rumi

He spoke of the breeze at dawn that has secrets to tell, and said do not go back to sleep. The door stands open only for a while.

Tao Te Ching 64

Act while the thing is still soft, before it hardens. What is easy to shape now becomes nearly immovable later.
