Then the men were exceedingly afraid, and said to him, “What have you done?” For the men knew that he was fleeing from the presence of Yahweh, because he had told them.

What does Jonah 1:10 mean?

Jonah is running from presence itself, from the one place where he is fully here and fully seen. A person can board any ship to escape it, yet the running only thickens the storm, inside and out.

Ego v. Being

Jonah is running from presence itself, from the one place where he is fully here and fully seen. A person can board any ship to escape it, yet the running only thickens the storm, inside and out.

The sailors feel the weight of that flight before they understand it, and fear grips them. Their question is the question every fleeing heart eventually meets. What have you done. Turning away from what is right in front of us does not make it smaller. It follows, until we stop and face where we already are.

  3. In the middle of a hard meeting or a tense call, when you feel yourself leaving, checking a tab, planning an exit, bring yourself back by feeling your feet on the floor. Stay in the room.
