Jonah 1:15 Meaning So They Took Up Jonah

So they took up Jonah, and threw him into the sea; and the sea ceased its raging.

What does Jonah 1:15 mean?

The fleeing part of the self is finally given up into the deep, and the turmoil stops. Jonah, the one who ran from his own calling, is the aspect of a person that resists the descent it is meant to make; the sea is the vast emotional and subconscious water churned into storm by that resistance.

Esoteric

The fleeing part of the self is finally given up into the deep, and the turmoil stops. Jonah, the one who ran from his own calling, is the aspect of a person that resists the descent it is meant to make; the sea is the vast emotional and subconscious water churned into storm by that resistance. Only when the running self is released into those depths, no longer held back on the deck of the surface mind, does the raging settle.

The waters quiet the instant the resisting self stops clinging above and sinks where it belongs. The storm was never the sea's own fury but the friction of a person refusing to go down into himself.

Jonah: the part of the self that flees its own calling and must be surrendered into the depths The sea: the deep emotional and subconscious waters within, thrown into storm by inner resistance The raging: the turmoil that stills the moment the fleeing self is released below the surface

Live Jonah 1:15 today

  1. Today, when a feeling you have been outrunning catches up, sit down and let it be there for two full minutes without a distraction. Do not analyze it, just stop running.
  2. Say the thing out loud to one person you trust, the fear or the sadness you have been managing alone in group chats and small talk. Let yourself go under in front of a witness.
  3. When the anxiety spikes at work, stop trying to think your way back to calm. Put both hands on the desk, let the wave move through, and watch it settle sooner than you expected.

What am I working so hard to stay above, and what would happen if I let myself go down into it?

Water does not fight the low places. It goes down where everything else refuses to go, and there it finds its ease.

Buddhism

The suffering is in the resisting. The feeling itself passes through a person who stops pushing back against it.

Sufism · Rumi

The wound is where the opening is. Stop running and let the grief take you down, and you will find the storm was made of your running.
