Jonah 2:3 Meaning For You Threw Me Into the Depths

For you threw me into the depths, in the heart of the seas. The flood was all around me. All your waves and your billows passed over me.

What does Jonah 2:3 mean?

EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

Jonah prays from the belly of the fish, swallowed by the very thing he fled. The deep closes over him, the waves roll across, and every escape the mind might invent is gone. Sometimes life drives a person down until there is nothing left to grip.

What looks like drowning can become surrender. When the fighting stops and a person stops thrashing against what is, the resistance drains away and a strange stillness opens at the bottom. The floods that seemed sent to destroy him become the place he finally lets go. From the lowest point, no longer clinging, he begins to pray. When a person stops fighting the moment, the same depth that pulled them under starts to carry them.

CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY

Clinical Psychology

A man who flees his obligation does not escape into freedom. He descends. Jonah is swallowed by the very deep he ran toward, and the waters that close over him are the natural weight of a life turned from its calling. The billows are not punishment invented from outside. They are what the flight itself becomes.

Yet the prayer rises from the bottom, which is the only place it could rise from. A person often finds the floor of himself only after everything has gone under. Refuse what you are meant to carry, and the ocean of consequence carries you instead. From there, at last, he starts to speak the truth.

Live Jonah 2:3 today

  1. If you are at the bottom of something today, stop trying to fix it for ten minutes. Sit, breathe, let it be as bad as it is, and see that you are still here.
  2. Tell one person the honest version instead of the managed version. Not the whole story, just one true sentence about how you actually are.
  3. When the bad news lands in your email or your group chat, resist the urge to immediately act. Put the phone face down, feel your breath go in and out three times, then respond.

What might hold me if I stopped fighting it?

Tao Te Ching 76

The soft and yielding survive. What is rigid breaks. Going down low is not the end of strength but the beginning of it.

Sufism · Rumi

The wound is where the light comes in. The place that breaks you open is the place that lets something through.

Buddhism

When you stop thrashing, you find that the waves were never solid. They rise and pass, and awareness is the water that holds them.
