Jonah 2:5 Meaning The Waters Surrounded Me

The waters surrounded me, even to the soul. The deep was around me. The weeds were wrapped around my head.

What does Jonah 2:5 mean?

When a person is pulled under like this, the water standing for everything beneath the surface of the mind, it feels like drowning. His old sense of who he is gives way, and the deeper layers he never chose rise up and close over him.

Psychoanalysis

This sinking is not punishment. Something in him has to go under before it can change. The weeds catching at his head are the old fears he cannot yet loosen. He stays there, tangled, until the self that was too small to hold his life comes apart and can be made again.

Live Jonah 2:5 today

  1. When the sinking feeling comes today, stop trying to get back to shore for five minutes. Breathe and let it be what it is instead of making it an emergency.
  2. Say out loud to one person that you are not okay, without the explanation or the plan to fix it. Being seen under the water is different from being pulled out of it.
  3. When an old fear catches at you again, the same one as always, name it as an old one rather than new evidence about your life. Weeds tangle, they do not drown you.

What in me is too small for the life I am actually living?

Tao Te Ching 16

All things return to the root, and the return looks like dying. Only what goes all the way down comes back up alive.

Buddhism

The self you hold onto was never solid, and when it starts to come apart it feels like drowning. What dissolves was only a shape, not you.

Sufism · Rumi

Die before you die, and what is left is what cannot die. The old identity has to be let go of, not defended.
