When my soul fainted within me, I remembered Yahweh. My prayer came in to you, into your holy temple.

Jonah 2:7 · World English Bible
When my soul fainted within me, I remembered Yahweh. My prayer came in to you, into your holy temple.
A man forgets the sun until the well he has fallen into goes dark. Only when his strength drained away did he think of the One he had been fleeing, and that thought became a rope.

SUFISM
A man forgets the sun until the well he has fallen into goes dark. Only when his strength drained away did he think of the One he had been fleeing, and that thought became a rope. The fault is common: keeping God for emergencies, remembering only when the water climbs.
Still, the prayer sent up from the very bottom arrived, welcomed into the holy place as if carried by hand. Distance was never the barrier. The practice is to turn back toward God in the ordinary hour, so remembrance becomes a habit and not merely a last cry.

SELF-HELP
What a man remembers when he is going under is the lever that decides whether he comes back up.
Remembering is something a person does, an act of focus under pressure, and focus is the one lever still working when the body is spent and the surroundings offer nothing.
Attention went to Yahweh and the fainting stopped, in that order. What a man aims at sets his state, the state sets what he is still capable of, and what he is capable of at the bottom decides whether the bottom is the end of the story. Prayer was the action that state produced, and it reached a place the man himself could not. Anyone who keeps attention on the size of their own trouble will measure it accurately and stay in it.
Sufism lens
Who do you only call when the water is rising?
He told his friend to practice the hard things while life is still easy, because nobody learns to swim during the shipwreck. Steadiness is built in the calm and spent in the storm.
The practice is daily and unremarkable on purpose, so that attention is already trained when something difficult arrives. You cannot build it in the emergency.
Deal with things while they are still small, before they harden into trouble. What is tended early never needs rescuing later.
