Joshua 1:9 · World English Bible

Joshua 1:9 Meaning Haven’t I Commanded You

Haven’t I commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid. Don’t be dismayed, for Yahweh your God is with you wherever you go.

What does Joshua 1:9 mean?

Fear lives only in the mind's picture of a moment that has not arrived. To be strong and of a good courage is not to manufacture bravery against tomorrow.

EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

Fear lives only in the mind's picture of a moment that has not arrived. To be strong and of a good courage is not to manufacture bravery against tomorrow. It is to notice what is already here: the presence some call God, which you cannot travel toward because it is the awareness looking out through your eyes right now. It goes with you whithersoever you go.

You do not have to still the trembling mind. You only have to feel the Being beneath it. When you rest there, fear loses its grip, because you are no longer lost in thought about what might happen. You are simply here, where nothing imagined can reach you.

CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY

Clinical Psychology

The command comes as a question, as though courage were already owed and merely needed remembering. Joshua stands at the edge of a river with a nation behind him and no map for the far side. Fear would be the honest response. The instruction is to move regardless, because retreat costs more than the crossing.

What travels with a person is not a guarantee of safety but a promise of company wherever he goes. Dismay comes from believing you face the unknown alone. To be strong is to walk into new territory trusting that the good goes with you. The far bank is reached by those who step into the water.

CYBERNETICS

Cybernetics

Courage arrives when a man stops carrying the whole road alone. Fear and dismay drain away, not because the danger shrinks, but because he no longer pictures himself abandoned to it. His self-image shifts from a small figure facing a large task to someone accompanied, and the striving mechanism steadies.

God goes with him wherever he goes. That promise reaches every corner of the ground ahead, and no unmapped place is left to face by himself. When a person holds such companionship as certain, the trembling settles, and the strength he was told to have becomes the strength he simply has.

Live Joshua 1:9 today

  1. In one anxious stretch today, stop trying to argue yourself calm. Just feel your hands, your weight in the chair, the air moving. Fear needs the future, and you are not there.
  2. When a friend spirals about what might happen, do not fuel it or shut it down. Ask them what is actually true right now, and answer it with them.
  3. When your phone buzzes with the thing you have been afraid of all day, put your feet flat and read it slowly. One breath before you act is the difference between you and your panic.

What is here, underneath the trembling?

You always have the power to retreat into yourself. That place is available in any moment, and nothing outside can occupy it.

The way is not somewhere you travel to. It is already under your feet, in whatever direction you walk.
