Joshua 14:12 · World English Bible

Joshua 14:12 Meaning Now Therefore Give Me This Hill Country

Now therefore give me this hill country, of which Yahweh spoke in that day; for you heard in that day how the Anakim were there, and great and fortified cities. It may be that Yahweh will be with me, and I shall drive them out, as Yahweh said.

What does Joshua 14:12 mean?

A belief kept alive for forty-five years does more for a man's strength than the forty-five years take away. Certainty compounds: every year a man rehearses a word he was given, he adds references to it, the thickened belief holds a state, and that state keeps a body doing at eighty-five what most abandon at fifty.

A belief kept alive for forty-five years does more for a man's strength than the forty-five years take away.

Choosing the hill country over the easy valleys is what that state looks like from outside; strength moves toward difficulty when the difficulty is where the promise was placed. And his certainty rests on what Yahweh said rather than on any estimate of his own powers, which is why he can allow that it may be and still ask for the worst ground on the map. Whoever cannot hold a belief that long inherits whatever the climbers left behind.

Live Joshua 14:12 today

  1. Write down one thing you believed about your life twenty years ago that you still believe. Add one piece of evidence from this year, and keep the note where you will see it.
  2. Ask an older person in your family what they have wanted for a long time and still want. Listening to a belief that has survived decades does something to your own.
  3. When the harder assignment comes up and the easy one is also available, ask for the hard one. People will tell you to take the valley, and the thing you actually want is up the hill.

What hill have you been talked out of asking for?

Stoicism · Seneca

A long life is not the gift. Holding one aim steady through all those years is what turns time into strength rather than wear.

Hinduism · Bhagavad Gita

One who keeps a single purpose through every season gathers steadiness, while the person of many minds is scattered by each new estimate.

Sufism · Rumi

What you have truly sought for decades has been seeking you, and the long wanting is itself the training for the day it arrives.
