Joshua 2:11 Meaning As Soon as We Had Heard It

As soon as we had heard it, our hearts melted, and there wasn’t any more spirit in any man, because of you: for Yahweh your God, he is God in heaven above, and on earth beneath.

What does Joshua 2:11 mean?

The same news that paralyzed a city moved one woman, because meaning gets assigned on arrival rather than delivered with the report. A report lands and the mind assigns it a meaning inside a second, and that assignment, not the news, decides whether a body goes rigid or goes to work.

The same news that paralyzed a city moved one woman, because meaning gets assigned on arrival rather than delivered with the report.

A report lands and the mind assigns it a meaning inside a second, and that assignment, not the news, decides whether a body goes rigid or goes to work. A whole city and one woman inside it took in identical evidence about an unseen God and arrived at opposite states.

They aimed their certainty at what they stood to lose, and dread of that size feels like prudence, so they waited behind walls. She aimed the same certainty at the God whose acts the report described, and that turned dread into allegiance while allegiance could still be traded for her household. Certainty that never converts into a decision leaves a person standing exactly where the feared thing is scheduled to arrive.

  1. Next time a message or headline lands hard, say the bare facts of it out loud with nothing added. Then see how much of the weight was in the part you added.
  2. When a friend brings you worrying news, ask what they think it means before you react to it. You will often find the meaning, not the news, is the thing to talk about.
  3. When you get the alert you were dreading, give yourself one sentence of what is true and one sentence of what you will do. Then put the phone down and do it.

When news arrives, what meaning do I hand it in the first second, before I have thought about it at all?

Epictetus, Enchiridion 5

People are disturbed not by things but by the view they take of them. Two people get the same news and only one of them gets up.

Zen · the two monks and the flag

One says the flag is moving, the other says the wind is moving. The teacher says it is your mind that moves. The report is the same either way.

Buddhism · the second arrow

The first arrow is the event. The second is the meaning you shoot into yourself about it, and only the second one is optional.
