Joshua 2:9 Meaning She Said to the Men

She said to the men, “I know that Yahweh has given you the land, and that the fear of you has fallen upon us, and that all the inhabitants of the land melt away before you.

What does Joshua 2:9 mean?

Two people can be equally certain of the same unseen outcome and one is freed by it while the other is destroyed. Certainty about what Yahweh will do can be held as information to act on or as dread to dissolve under, and the difference sits in the aim rather than in the accuracy.

Two people can be equally certain of the same unseen outcome and one is freed by it while the other is destroyed.

Certainty about what Yahweh will do can be held as information to act on or as dread to dissolve under, and the difference sits in the aim rather than in the accuracy. Melting is what conviction produces when a person points it at what they do not want; movement is what identical conviction produces when it is pointed at a future a person intends to be standing inside.

One woman converted an unseen outcome into terms, a scarlet cord, a household gathered under one roof. Her neighbors held the same information and spent it on melted knees, and melted knees do not negotiate. What that costs is the window: while the body is dissolving, the hands that could have made an arrangement are not working.

Live Joshua 2:9 today

  1. Write down the thing you are most sure is coming, good or bad, and then one small action it calls for. Certainty with no action attached just sits in your chest.
  2. Talk to the one person who would be affected and make an actual arrangement, not a vent session. Who does what, by when.
  3. When bad news hits and your body goes heavy, give yourself five minutes, then ask what is still in your hands. Something always is, and the heaviness hides it.

I am certain about something. Am I using that certainty, or dissolving under it?

The same truth in other traditions

Stoicism · Seneca

He said we suffer more in imagination than in reality. The same forecast can be read as a warning to prepare with or as a dread to drown in, and that choice is yours.

Bhagavad Gita

Arjuna's hands shake and his bow slips while the battle waits. Krishna's counsel is not to feel differently first but to stand up and act from what he knows.

Tao Te Ching 64

Deal with a thing while it is still small. The one who acts early is working with the same facts as the one who waits, and only one of them still has room to move.
