Fear of God means reverence, the awe of standing before someone real and immense, and in a healthy life it ripens into love and stops feeling like dread.

Idols travel in the family luggage. They cross a rescue and a wilderness without ever being chosen, which is how inherited habits of the heart survive: unexamined, and needing a deliberate hand to unpack them. Putting away is something done, not felt, and repentance keeps that shape. Serving in sincerity means undivided service, so no second altar is kept in reserve in case the first one disappoints. Anything given the weight that belongs to God is already one of those old gods.

EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

The old gods were not only statues. They are the things the mind still bows to for its sense of self, the possessions, roles, and grievances a person serves without noticing. To put them away is to see they were never able to make us whole.

Serving in sincerity means the false center is set down and attention rests on what is present and living instead. Awe of the Lord is awe of that vast being, so much larger than any idol the mind can carry out of Egypt. When the borrowed gods fall silent, a person finally serves from the depth that was there all along.

  1. Name the thing you reach for when you are anxious: your phone, the fridge, scrolling a shopping app. Today, move it out of reach rather than promising yourself you will resist it.
  2. Ask a parent or an older relative about a habit or an attitude that ran in your family. Then decide out loud, to them or to yourself, whether you are keeping it.
  3. When work asks for one more hour that belongs to someone at home, say no with a plain sentence and no apology stacked on top. Whatever you keep saying yes to is what you actually serve.

What did I inherit and never choose, and still carry everywhere I go?

Stoicism · Epictetus

He taught that most of what torments us came to us secondhand, opinions we absorbed without ever examining them. Freedom begins when you take each one down off the shelf and ask whether you actually hold it.

Taoism · Tao Te Ching

The sage is told to empty out the clutter and return to the simple root. Letting go is described as something you do, not something that happens to you when you feel ready.

Buddhism

The second truth names craving as the thing that keeps turning the wheel, and the path puts a deliberate end to it. Nothing in the teaching waits for the craving to dissolve on its own.
