Joshua 4:6 Meaning That This May Be a Sign Among

that this may be a sign among you, that when your children ask in the future, saying, ‘What do you mean by these stones?’

Children do not inherit answers, they inherit the questions their parents made unavoidable.

An explanation handed to a child gets stored. A question handed to a child gets pursued, and what the pursuit turns up becomes belief, belief sets the state, and the state decides what that child does at the next impossible crossing. Those stones were never for the ones who carried them.

A question carried for twenty years builds a whole life around its own answer; set a child asking what God did at that water and they will still be gathering evidence at fifty. Hand a child no question and they do not grow up questionless; they take whichever one the age around them supplies and answer it faithfully for decades.

Live Joshua 4:6 today

  1. Think of one question you have been carrying for years, and write it down plainly on your phone. Seeing which question you have actually been answering with your life tells you more than any advice would.
  2. The next time a child or a younger person at work asks you something you know the answer to, ask them what they think first and sit with the silence. Let them leave with the question instead of your summary.
  3. When someone in a group chat wants a verdict from you under pressure, slow down and ask one real question back rather than handing over a tidy opinion. A good question stays with people long after a hot take has scrolled away.

Which question did someone hand you long ago that you are still gathering evidence for?

Zen

A teacher answers a student's question with another question, because a given answer closes the mind while a live question keeps working in it for years.

Judaism · the Passover seder

The whole night is built around a child asking why this night is different, and the family's memory survives because the asking was arranged in advance.

Greek philosophy · Socrates

He claimed to teach nothing and only asked, trusting that a person who finds a thing themselves holds it, while a person who is told it sets it down.
