Judges 1:19 Meaning Yahweh Was with Judah

Yahweh was with Judah, and drove out the inhabitants of the hill country; for he could not drive out the inhabitants of the valley, because they had chariots of iron.

What does Judges 1:19 mean?

Mastery over the higher ground comes readily; the low ground resists. Judah, the faculty of praise and inner ruler, clears the heights of the mind where thought is airy and near to spirit, yet the valley holds firm, for there the appetites move on iron.

Esoteric

Mastery over the higher ground comes readily; the low ground resists. Judah, the faculty of praise and inner ruler, clears the heights of the mind where thought is airy and near to spirit, yet the valley holds firm, for there the appetites move on iron. The chariots are the racing lower drives, armored in hardened worldly will, too swift and too fixed for praise alone to unseat.

So a person governs the summit of attention while the sunk hungers keep their field, and the work of the higher self stops at the edge of the flesh it has not yet refined.

Judah: the faculty of praise, the inner ruler that lifts the mind toward its own high country The mountain: the elevated regions of consciousness, thought made airy and near to spirit The valley: the low ground of the body where appetite and instinct settle and hold Chariots of iron: the racing lower drives, armored in hardened worldly will, too swift for praise to unseat

  1. Admit one place where you know better and still do the thing. Do not fight it today, just look at it honestly and stop pretending that understanding it was the same as beating it.
  2. With someone who knows you well, say out loud the gap between what you believe and how you actually behave. Being seen in it takes some of its armor off.
  3. When a drive comes at you fast, the angry reply, the second drink, the open app, slow it down by ten seconds. You do not have to win, you only have to stop being driven.

What in you keeps its ground no matter how much you understand about it?

Buddhism · the hindrances

The mind can grow clear and bright in sitting and still find craving waiting in the body, untouched by insight alone. Clarity is not the same as freedom.

Plato, Phaedrus

The charioteer may hold the reins and understand the road perfectly, and still one horse pulls downward with its whole weight.

Stoicism · Epictetus

He warned that it is easy to recite the right principles and hard to keep them when the body is hungry, afraid or wanting. The test is always lower down than the theory.
