Judges 13:18 Meaning Yahweh’s Angel Said to Him

Yahweh’s angel said to him, “Why do you ask about my name, since it is incomprehensible?”

What does Judges 13:18 mean?

The mind always wants a name. It wants to capture the sacred in a word, to hold it as a concept it can file away and feel it understands.

Ego v. Being

The mind always wants a name. It wants to capture the sacred in a word, to hold it as a concept it can file away and feel it understands. But that which gives life to all things cannot be caught in any name, because every name is a thought, and the reality is what exists before thought arises.

This is why it is called secret. Not hidden from you, but beyond the reach of the grasping mind. You cannot think your way to it. You can only grow still and feel the living presence that is already here, nameless and closer than the word you were about to reach for.

Live Judges 13:18 today

  1. Sit for two minutes today without trying to label what you are feeling or explain it to yourself. Just be in it and let it stay unnamed.
  2. In a conversation, resist finishing the other person's thought with your own word for it. Let them be more than your summary of them.
  3. When you hit something at work you cannot immediately categorize, sit with the not knowing for a minute before you reach for a search bar. Some things open only after the grabbing stops.

What have you understood less since you found a word for it?

Tao Te Ching 1

The way that can be put into words is not the way. The name you reach for is already one step away from the thing.
