Ego v. Being

Something in us believes that to truly meet the divine is to be destroyed, and in a sense this fear is accurate. Manoah, having seen the messenger vanish into flame, is sure death is coming. What he cannot yet know is which self must end. When the sacred breaks through, the small self built of fear and separation cannot survive the encounter.

What dies when you awaken is only the person you took yourself to be, the anxious "me" that stood apart from everything. The life within you does not die; it is uncovered. So the terror of losing yourself before the presence is real, and on the other side of it is not an ending but the aliveness that was always underneath.

Live Judges 13:22 today

  1. When you feel that flash of dread before doing something honest, treat it as a sign you are near something real rather than a reason to back off. Fear often stands right at the door.
  2. Let someone see a part of you that you usually manage carefully. What dies there is the performance, not you.
  3. In a conflict today, try dropping the need to come out of it looking right. It feels like losing, and what is actually lost is only the defending.

What version of yourself could end today without you being any smaller?

The same truth in other traditions

Sufism

Die before you die, the teachers say, meaning let the small self go while you are still living. What is left is more alive, not less.

Zen

The old masters speak of the great death, the end of the self you have been defending. Only after it does real life begin.

Hinduism · Upanishads

Like a river losing its name and form when it reaches the sea. Nothing is destroyed; only the separateness ends.
